ACADEMIC POLICIES
Courses Requirements
We provide state-approved curriculum for our students. We will choose appropriate curriculum for your child based on testing and counseling.
Bible Emphasis
ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS take a Bible course each year they attend Pathways. These courses are non-denominational in approach and emphasis Biblical truth. These courses are intended to help the student learn more about the Bible and to lead the student to a deeper understanding of the work of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and their personal Savior. They do not focus on denominational doctrines or differences.
Grading Scale A = 90 - 100 B = 80 - 89 C = 70 - 79 D = 60 - 69 A student receiving any grade below 70 must repeat the pace until a 70 or better grade is achieved.
SUPPLIES & DEVICES
Electronic Device Guidelines
Gaming devices or other electronic games may be brought to the learning center for use at break time. Administrators have the right to ask a student not to bring certain kinds of games to the school if considered unfit for other students to play. Games can only be played during break-time or between scheduled activities. Students are only allowed to play games when they are on-task in their work, have good behavior, and are not creating chaos with their device. Students are also allowed to bring I-Pods, and other audio devices to school. They may use them only during break periods. Students are also allowed to bring I-Pods and other audio devices to school. They are to use them only during break periods. Smart Phones, cell phones, and other such devices may be brought to school, but must be placed in the storage bags as they arrive. They may use them during breaks and lunch. They can also pick them up as they are dismissed. Computers Laptops , I-Pads, and tablets may be brought to school, but used only for school activities while in class. Students may use them for leisure after their goals are met or during break-times.
Pathways Supplies
Each student at Pathways must bring proper supplies to the learning center each day. The following is a list of school supplies that your child will need:
We ask that parents also help us by donating any of the following items: bulk containers of Kleenex tissues, paper plates (not Styrofoam), plastic forks, plastic spoons, napkins, pencils, notebook paper, and copier paper. Students use these items each school day, and it is such a blessing when you help us supply these items for them. We also need donations of $20 to purchase the printer toner and copier ink that the students use throughout the school year. Note: No calculators are allowed in the learning center except for approved advanced math courses. If approved, a student must bring his or her own calculator. They should not leave their calculators in the learning center or student boxes overnight. Students are not allowed to borrow calculators from other students or use their cell phone calculator feature.
OTHER POLICIES Lunch and Snacks Students should bring their lunch and snacks to school each day. Food cannot be stored overnight at Pathways due to regulations of the Health Department. Please provide your child with food items that do not contain liquid such as soups. Sandwiches or prepackaged containers of food are excellent. However, the prepackage container should be microwaveable without having to transfer its contents to a plate or bowl for heating. Frozen food dinners should not require more than 5 minutes to heat in a microwave.
Birthday Celebrations
At Pathways, we like to celebrate each student’s birthday. We enjoy when parents bring cake, cookies, or ice cream for the occasion. However, to avoid chaos during the school day, we ask that you bring these items to the school no later than 9:30 AM in the morning. We celebrate birthdays only during the 10:00 AM break. Lunchtime is not a good time for such celebrations. Therefore, any item brought in after 9:30 AM is held until the next morning and the student’s birthday is celebrated at that time.
ENROLLMENT & ATTENDANCE
Enrollment Policy
Enrollment in Pathways is at the discretion of the Administrator of Pathways based on the academic and behavior performance of the student. Pathways admits students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin. Pathways does not discriminate, on the basis of race, color, national origin, or ethnic origin, in any of its programs. Enrollment in a Pathways program is a privilege and not a right. Children earn the right to be members of the student body so long as they observe the spirit of our program. The purpose of our program is to help your child better their lives spiritually and academically.
Absenteeism
When as student is absent, they must bring a written letter detailing the reasons for the absence. The State of North Carolina requires Pathways to maintain these letters on file.
Students must be at school each day by 8:30 AM. Tardiness results in students missing early morning group activities, prayer, instructions, and other important events. Three tardies will be counted as an absence. Any student with 20 absences will be required to attend summer school in order to receive credit for the school term and to be accepted as a student for the next school term.
The following is a list of excused absences:
Drop-off and Pick-up of Students
Drop-offs begin at 8:15 AM. Pick-ups end no later than 2:45 PM
Pathways Administrators and teachers often have Church and personal responsibilities and appointments that require that they leave the school grounds no later than 3:00 PM. We ask that all children be picked up by 2:45 PM. At 2:45 PM, if children are still not picked up, we must call a caregiver, in order, that they can be at the school by 3:00 PM. Children not picked up by 2:45 PM will automatically be billed for after-school care. Since a caregiver has been called, you will be responsible for their first hour of care even if you arrive and pick up your child before they arrive. The charge per hour is $12.00. It is crucial that children are dropped off by 8:30 AM and picked up no later than 2:45 PM.
The doors of Pathways are kept locked during the day for security of the students. When picking up your child, please ring the doorbell that is on the left side of the door and return to your vehicle when a teacher signals their recognition of you. They will send your child to your vehicle shortly.
WHEN PICKING UP YOUR CHILD, PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE FACILITY. IT CAUSES DISRUPTION AMONG THE STUDENTS WHEN TEACHERS ARE PREOCCUPIED WITH PARENTS.
If you wish to speak to a teacher, please call, text, or email for an appointment so that a conference can be arranged without disrupting the classroom or dismissal of students at the end of school.
Inclement Weather
We will follow the decisions of the New Hanover County Board of Education as to whether we will be closed, starting late, or letting out early due to inclement weather.
An email will be sent to parents, as well, to inform parents of cancellations or delays. We will also post information on this website and on the Glad Tidings Celebration and Faith Church Facebook page. We will also try to announce any cancellations due to an emergency, hurricane, or other storm conditions on weather updates at WWAY-TV or WECT-TV.
Special Events
All students are to be involved with chapel and special assemblies, field trips, public library outings, and other activities. They must participate in these events since they are part of their learning experience.
TO MAINTAIN ORDER AND AVOID DISRUPTIONS, CHILDREN NOT ENROLLED AT PATHWAYS, REGARDLESS OF AGE, SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT INTO THE SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS OR TO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES TAKING PLACE DURING SCHOOL HOURS UNLESS NOTIFIED OTHERWISE. PARENTS AND CHILDREN ARE OFTEN INVITED TO JOIN US FOR CERTAIN FIELD TRIPS AND OUTINGS. WE WILL LET YOU KNOW WHICH ONES ARE OPEN TO OTHER CHILDREN PRIOR TO THE EVENT. PARENTS ARE ALWAYS INVITED TO JOIN IN ANY ACTIVITY THEIR SON OR DAUGHTER IS INVOLVED IN.
Pets
We recognize that pets are often as much a part of your family as your children. However, Pathways and its events are not conductive to the presence of animals of any type. Please do not bring your pets to any Pathways event. We also ask that any animal inside your vehicle be kept there. Please do not bring them to the door and announce to the children that you have a pet for them to see. It is disruptive and children often run to see pets without properly looking at vehicles arriving or leaving our premises. We need to maintain order among the students and animals can create disorder among them.
Students Leaving School Grounds
Once students arrive to school, they cannot leave until released by the Administrator into the care of parents, guardians, or other approved adults. Students, who drive, can leave if their guardian provides the Administrators with written authorization for them to do so. A letter giving your child permission to leave school when they have completed their goals should be given to Administrators as soon as your child begins driving. Phone calls are acceptable for special situations requiring the student to leave early. Leaving early when schoolwork is finished is a privilege and given only to those students meeting set goals at Pathways.
FOR PARENTS
Student/Parent/Faculty Relationship
Pathways operates as a partnership between parents, students, and faculty. It is modeled on the principle of the triangle. The parents are on one side, the student on one side, and Pathways on the other. This triangular arrangement is based on relationship and trust. If one partner teams up with another, it has ceased to be a relationship and has become a conflict. Pathways will not be involved in any form of conflict. We will not side up with the student against the parents and we will not continue any relationship with parents who side up with the student. We are here to work together, not against one another.
Each partner in the triangle has certain responsibilities:
PATHWAYS: Pathways must provide students with a quality learning atmosphere, safe environment, state approved curriculum, caring teachers, and various social opportunities. Pathways provides parents the comfort of knowing their child is receiving the education to advance each year to a higher grade level and preparation to attend an institute of higher learning when they graduate.
PARENTS: Parents are to ensure that their child is properly rested each night, is provided breakfast in the morning, is dressed in the proper dress code, and has proper supplies for the school day. They are to make sure their child arrives and is picked up on time. They are to support Pathways in discipline and assignments. Parents are to also provide their children with spiritual training which includes taking their child to Church each Sunday.
STUDENTS: Students are to come to the learning center with a positive attitude, proper respect, and a willingness to learn. They are to strive to adhere to all school policies and to maintain order and cleanliness around them at all times. They are to refrain from negative or unbecoming language or slang. They are not to touch, push, or in any manner bully other children. They are to honor and respect the sanctity of the Church that is providing ministry to them. They are to bring supplies to school each day. They are to be honest in their work and scoring. They are to display Christian values in their lifestyle, words, and demeanor.
Parent Behavioral Expectations
Visiting Pathways
The Pathways Office hours are 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. All forgotten items (lunch, medicine, paper) should be dropped off with as little distraction as possible. NEVER GO DIRECTLY INTO THE LEARNING CENTER OR TESTING AREAS WITHOUT PERMISSION!
Field Trips
Field trips will be available to those students who are academically on task, have no disciplinary issues, and display a positive attitude. A signed release form for your child will be kept on file. Details of the trip, clothes to wear, items to bring, and the length of the trip will be provided the parents concerning each field trip. We invite parents to volunteer to help transport students and to enjoy these field trips with their children.
Other children, who do not attend Pathways, should not be brought on field trips. Field trips are an award for our students. Small toddlers and other children are a distraction from our intent and place additional stresses on teachers and resources. Please honor this request and do not ask a teacher to violate this rule. If other children are invited to attend, you will receive notice so you can make plans.

BEHAVIORAL POLICIES
Inappropriate Behaviors
Internet Use
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and similar social networking sites are prevalent today. Students often have accounts on these sites. We encourage students to use them responsibly. Any negative attacks or comments on any site concerning this school, Church personnel, personnel, or other students or their parents will be dealt with severely. PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THEIR CHILDREN SAY AND DO ON THESE SITES. PLEASE MONITOR THEM APPROPRIATELY. If a blocked site is reported to contain inappropriate content, we reserve the right to have the student, in the presence of their parents, open their file for the Pathways Administrator to examine. Improper sites and/or content will result in expulsion from Pathways.
Dating
Students are expected to recognize that certain activities have certain responsibilities. Dating is one of these. The issue of whom a student dates falls under parental authority. The learning sessions, however, is not the place for students to demonstrate their romance in any manner. There will be no holding hands, hands on legs, sitting together on a chair, hugging, messaging shoulders, embracing, kissing, or other forms of physical contact that Pathways deems inappropriate. No boy and girl are to seclude themselves in a hidden or out-of-the-way space.
Attitude
Attitudes can be demonstrated in various ways. We are all aware that facial expression, eye contact, body stance, sitting or standing posture, head tilting, or tone of voice can be used to communicate non-verbally to others. These methods will not be tolerated when used to make subtle rebellious or negative attitude statements to students, instructors, or other adults.
Treatment of Pathways Property
Glad Tidings church and Pathways school belong to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We should endeavor to make sure that His facility and grounds are clean at all times. The cleanliness and order of our Church will be the first impression that visitors get of us. Anyone damaging the facility, equipment, or property will pay for such damage regardless of intent. Willful defacing, littering, writing on the walls or sidewalks, or other acts of destruction will also receive additional punishment.
AUTOMOBILES
Student Automobiles
Students must register their automobile with the School. Automobiles are to be used by the authorized driver. Once a student has arrived at Pathways, he/she is to lock the vehicle and enter the facility until released. They are not to go back to their vehicle unless given permission by the staff. Driving an automobile to attend Pathways is a privilege. Driving privileges can be revoked for the following reasons:
Obtaining a Driver License Permit
Students wishing to obtain their driver’s license or permit must have passed four of their last six major courses to receive a Driving Eligibility Certificate. Those who already have their driving license or permit may have it revoke if they do not pass four out of six major courses. This is based on testing administered by Pathways.
